It might surprise you to learn High Ridge is not the highest point in Jefferson County. Measuring 970 feet above sea level, our town is the third highest point in Jefferson County behind Vinegar Hill, near the St. Francois County border (elevation 1,070 feet) and land near Tower Road and Route 21 (elevation 975 feet). While we may rank third in elevation, High Ridge ranks first among its residents, in part, because it’s been a great community from its start. Bounded on one side by the Big River and the other by the Meramec River, High Ridge began life as a stagecoach stop, and as a destination for early settlers and migrants who were drawn to the many rivers and springs in the area. High Ridge was originally called Hampton when Thomas Maddox opened the first post office in 1844 until, in 1860; another postmaster renamed the post office Tallow Hill because of the high volume of slaughterhouses in the vicinity. Because the ground is compact and rocky, conventional farming was not possible, so farmers instead took to successfully growing fruit trees, strawberries, blackberries and truck farm produce to sell in Saint Louis. The village of High Ridge subsequently sprang up near the current location of High Ridge Boulevard.
