What Do Spark Plug Wires Do?
Spark plug wires — also called high-tension leads or ignition wires — are insulated cables that carry electrical pulses of 30,000 to 50,000 volts from the ignition coil pack or distributor cap to each spark plug. The plug fires this charge across a gap to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. The wires must withstand extreme heat, engine vibration, and high electrical stress — conditions that cause the insulation and internal carbon conductors to degrade over time.
Note: not all modern vehicles use spark plug wires. Coil-on-plug (COP) ignition systems — now common on most newer vehicles — place an individual coil directly on each spark plug, eliminating the wire entirely. Vehicles with traditional distributor systems or remote coil packs do use plug wires and should have them replaced as part of a complete tune-up.
